Abstract
In December 2008, version 1.0 of JavaFX was officially released, but Sun’s answer to Adobe’s Flex/AIR and Microsoft’s Silverlight technology didn’t get the attention it would have liked. On the one hand JavaFX requires you to learn yet another scripting language and on the other hand the idea of having Java on the client side doesn’t seem to be very appealing considering the experience made with Java Applets in the past. Nevertheless, AdNovum did choose JavaFX as the UI technology for a strategic customer project recently. The project’s goal: a rich and interactive desktop application.

In the first part of this session we discuss why JavaFX DID win AdNovum’s technology evaluation over Eclipse RCP and Adobe Flex/AIR. In the second part we dig deeper into some of the technical details of the project and show you how JavaFX helped us solving some of the demanding customer requirements. Finally, we attempt a brief outlook at the future of JavaFX under the new ownership of Oracle.
