Abstract

With Java DB/Apache Derby in both Glassfish and Sun JDK 6, Java developers have
a complete relational database system written entirely in Java easily available
for use both during development and in production. Java DB supports JDBC and SQL
and provides transactions and durability of data.

In this presentation we give an overview of how to configure Java DB in order to
achieve optimal performance while at the same time being able to handle failure
scenarios without loss of data. Examples of how different configurations for
hardware, operating system and Java DB influence the performance will be given.
The presentation also includes tips and tricks for the application programmer on
how to maximize the performance.

A comparison of Java DB and other open-source databases with regards to
performance for data stored in the database is included in the presentation.

This presentation is intended for Java programmers who plan to use Java DB
(Apache Derby) during development and particularly in production. The
presentation will instruct users on how to program and how to configure Java DB
in order to make their Java applications perform optimally with Java DB and at
the same time ensure that data is safely stored even after failure situations.
