Abstract
In this talk we describe the work currently under way to define the next version
of the Java EE platform (Java EE 6).
In addition to offering many standard components, the the Java EE platform has
fostered a vibrant community and marketplace for additional technologies,
frameworks, and applications that work with the platform. Some of these provide
facilities that are missing from the platform. Others provide alternatives to
platform facilities.
A major theme for this release is to embrace and support those technologies as
part of the overall Java EE landscape, while also continuing to simplify the
platform to better target a wider range of developers.
The main features added in Java EE 6 are: extensibility, profiles and pruning.
Using these features it becomes possible to ship application server products
that target very closely the actual needs of a development team, both by
removing certain unneeded components and by adding new, desirable ones in a
controlled way.
We expect that both old and new Java EE developers will find the new platform
more accessible and more focused, with clear benefits in areas such as ease of
development, availability of tools, integration with third-party and open source
frameworks and libraries, variety of deployment options, reduced runtime
footprint.
